A tree tribute

Six million trees are to be planted over the next year forming hundreds of Jubilee and Diamond Woods all over the UK to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The Woodland Trust is asking for local communities, schools, businesses and landowners to plant trees on their own land. The newly-created Jubilee Woods of an acre or more will form a green tribute to Her Majesty. The woods will also benefit local people by creating a haven for biodiversity.

Princess Anne (the patron of the project) with WT President Clive Anderson and CEO Sue Holden © WTPLThe Trust can offer help and advice to anyone planting trees for this project, such as which native British species to choose. They may even be able to help with funding, and are offering a 1,000 free tree packs, including a Royal Sapling grown from trees on royal estates such as Sandringham, to start you off. The packs come in two sizes – small packs of 105 saplings to plant a hedge or small copse, or large packs of 420 saplings to plant an acre of land.

The Woodland Trust is also asking landowners to plant 60 new forests of 60 acres each to mark every year of the Queen’s reign. These Diamond Woods will form a living legacy of Her Majesty’s reign. They are asking businesses to sponsor the new woods.

Tree planting will being this autumn and continue through to next year.
